-1 - An error has occurred. --- It was not possible to copy the selected file.

The error is on a blank white page, apparently a table with two cells, like this:

-1 - An error has occurred.
It was not possible to copy the selected file

I have tried as many of the suggestions as I can find, including extending the timeouts, etc. PHP Safe mode is off. File permissions seem OK, and several other packages upload just fine.

Configuration:
Joomla: Production stable 1.5.9 (Vatani)
PHP: 5.2.8
Server: Linux
Browser: Firefox 3.0.6

php.ini says:
memory_limit = 64M
register_globals = off
max_execution_time = 900
mysql.connect_timeout = 120

Now, as to what is different on my system from what the installer might be assuming:
1) My joomla root is non-standard (it has underscore in the name, but is directly below root.
2) My temp file is non-standard (it has ampersand in the name, but is directly below the joomla root folder)

Example (not real data)
/
...My_Joomla_Root_Folder
......MyTemporary&Folder

The installer runs for a long time, about 5 minutes, before it gets to the error noted above.

The installer generatates a lot of files and directories before failing. See snapshot. Most of these are under the admin directory, but there's also a com_civicrm under components. It has two files, civicrm.html.php and civicrm.php

what version of civicrm? I'd recommend trying the 2.2 joomla install

if that also fails, you might also want to try with a standard root and temp directory name and see if that works

Trying to install 2.1.4 stable. However, I am not sure of the differences between the beta versions. My choices seem to be:
civicrm-2.2.beta2-joomla-alt.zip  Size is 12383604
civicrm-2.2.beta2-joomla.zip  Size is 11055453

What's the difference between these versions?

Will try to install 2.2. If that is successful, would it indicate a bug in the installer for 2.1.4?

try: civicrm-2.2.beta2-joomla.zip first before u try the -alt (which is the old style format)

most install issues are due to size of civicrm and the joomla installer. not a lot we can do

Tried first installer. Too late (almost 1am) to try second installer (-alt). Here are the results.

Installation errors after about 3 minutes. Using non-standard temp directory.

Installation errors after about 3 minutes. Using standard tmp directory.

However, civiCRM has installed. Running it gives following error:

In fact, there is no file Config.php in the specified directory.

you might need to switch to a more powerful host and/or upgrade your hosting plan

hmmm.
What, specifically, needs to be upgraded? I have 250GB of disk space, 2.5Terabytes/month transfer volume. What else is needed for civiCRM? What failure mode do you diagnose to make your recommendation? TIA.

nothing specific, but those errors in the past have typically been due to websites on busy servers and hence install does not have time to finish

on my 3 year old macbook, the joomla install takes approx 30 seconds to finish
