Custom Fields on event registration

I know this might belong in the CiviEvent forum so move it if it needs to be.

This is regarding Custom Data Fields on an event registration form.  I have think I have read where you can create custom data fields and then include them in a profile which can be included in a registration form, correct?  I am need to create a field where come can type in a list of names.  I created a custom data field, but cannot figure out how to add it to a profile.  Is there something I need to designate in the custom data group so it will show up in the profile I am using?

Once u create a custom data group (and hence custom fields in that group), you can do to the profile screen (administer civicrm >> civicrm profile) and create a profile group and add profile fields to it. You can choose between standard and previously created custom fields to add to the profile

You can then add the profile to the event registration form

What I am missing is, I don't see where to add a custom data field to a profile. When I go to a profile and add a new field I get the Field Name drop-down with the 5 choices.  Is that where custom should be too?

Lets assume u have Custom Group (and Fields) created extending Individuals. If you choose Individual, another select box will appear showing additional fields which will include your custom fields created

You need to make sure that the custom data group that you add your custom field(s) to is setup to be "Used for" the right type of record. If you want to collect custom data about a Participant in an Event on your Event Registration forms... then:
* Custom data group setting is Used For = Participant
* Then when creating the field in your Profile - select Participant as the record type. You should see your custom field as a choice (along with the other standard participant fields like Status and Role).

Thanks Dave, that did it.

I chose use for Events thinking I was making the form for an event...

Everything is good now.
