Changing event & price set
February 24, 2009, 09:46:25 am
On the demo
  • I create an event with price set fees and do a pay later enrolment
  • I then go in and change registration to a different event

I am not given the options to change the price options
If the event fee type changes my contribution doesn't.

( ideally the participant would also get a status changed e-mail).

I have a slightly different error on our live site - still trying to reproduce that)

Eileen - what do you mean by "change registration to a different event" (is this from the contact's Event tab - edit participant record)? Sounds like your expecting quite a complex set of behaviors for this (if I'm understanding you correctly):
* delete existing pending contribution
* create a new one w/ the correct new fee amount
* generate new "confirmation / receipt" to participant

I'm not sure we'd go down this road. Maybe we shouldn't allow change of event if there's an existing contribution record - and force the user to delete this registration and create a new one (which then would send new event confirmation etc.).

Yes - it possibly is too complex & should be prevented. The circumstance I am trying to use it in on our live site is changed between two almost identical events and I get an error (which is differnt to what I discovered on the sandbox) but yes - blocking it may be the best option - I used Find Paticipants / pending & pay later to get to the edit screen.

Eileen - I think the correct behavior here is to prevent users from changing the selected event if there is an associated payment (contribution record). I've filed this as a bug fix for 2.2:

Sigh, I've written a few stupid things on this forum over the last couple of years but this thread is the one I most regret.

I FREQUENTLY have to change people's registrations between events with exactly the same pricing and since the fix in this thread was implemented I either do it via mysql or by deleting and recreating the registrations. I have also found that on other sites I have recommended more complex ways of setting up events to work around this fix.

I have just searched out this post to try to find out what the 'fix' was so I can reverse it on the sites I deal with but now I've found it Fisheye seems to be down.

Repository Localisation on http://fisheye.civicrm.org/ failed: http://fisheye.civicrm.org/api/rest/query returned 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable
Repository CiviCRM on http://fisheye.civicrm.org/ failed: http://fisheye.civicrm.org/api/rest/query returned 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable

Perhaps since this change is applicable to some implementations but a proverbial pain in the ... for others a compromise might be an warning message when people try to change between events?

Fisheye is down for another few days - we were having problems with it bringing down our main websites. Not sure what to do about your actual issue. It seems like canceling the initial event registration and creating a new one is a cleaner / more auditable approach to me. What do other folks think? Is this restriction a problem for others?

I have been thinking about a few of my issues (including this one of late and find that several of them are inter-related so I've been trying to put these thoughts into some blogs to flesh them out properly. But, basically the conclusion I came to is that the main reason this is so problematic for me is that someone has paid by credit card and I cancel the event registration and re-register them in a different event the credit card transaction is not now linked to the new event

Possibly the credit card transaction shows as cancelled too? Which would also be a problem. I'm not sure because the first issue is significant enough for me to make the changes through PHPMyAdmin rather than CiviCRM.
