Not unique to 2.2 either I guess but is there anyway to make a custom field bigger than what you get by default http://sandbox.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/custom/group?action=preview&reset=1&id=1

I would suggest using custom field of  Data Type = 'Note' and Field Type = 'TextArea',

and adjust the Height and Width accordingly.
