administrative data editing
February 26, 2009, 08:38:42 am
I'm co-chair of a committee that is managing our nonprofit organization's transition from a static HTML website and a desktop database to a fully-integrated information technology using Drupal and CiviCRM.  We have an in-house web developer who has been forced to upgrade to the beta version in order to satisfy our organization's wish-list.  We've been working on this for a year and a half and have not gone live yet.

The question before our committee today has to do with our administrative director and her part-time clerical staff and their data-entry and data-editing duties.  We are wondering if we will need to build a separate database client for staff to update Contact and Member data because at first blush the Drupal web GUI seems slow and laborious.  We've seen the Entity Relation Diagram for CiviCRM and understand we are not talking about a simple project.  We know we still need to explore just how slow the web interface is compared to a desktop database before we make any decisions, but thought we'd ask:

Are there organizations out there using CiviCRM with Drupal that have opted to build their own database client for administrative staff?

Are there organizations that do a lot of administrative data entry that have considered or attempted doing this and could offer any thoughts?

Lots of organizations use the standard CiviCRM screens from a web browser for data entry and editing. And there are quite a few easy ways to simplify / reduce the number of elements on these screens if that's an issue. Your web developer can also create custom versions of the screen layouts (which requires only basic technical skills).

If the web pages for search, data entry and contact display are responding slowly I would think your first approach would be to evaluate your current hosting / server environment and consider spending a bit more money to upgrade that (better / dedicated hardware, connectivity, etc.). This is bound to be much cheaper and faster than building a desktop client.

If there are specific common work-flows that are awkward - would be good to discuss those on this forum to see if there's solutions with the current release and / or changes in the works.

Thanks very much, Dave; that's encouraging.  We need to look at our workflows.  Then I might be back with slightly more specific questions.
