CiviEvent and Organic Groups
March 02, 2009, 07:12:42 pm
We are considering the use of CiviEvent to replace Organic Group events and recurring events. We are divided up into hundreds of "country/chapter" committees and each one would want control over their own events so that an event posted to take place in Australia would not be seen by other committees in other countries.

What is the best way to implement this?

Dennis - Pretty sure you'd need to use ACL's to make this work, and given the number committees - you'd need to use the ACL hook approach (where permissioning is dynamic based on a pair of custom fields (one on events and one on each contacts to identify the committee they belong to). I think you'll need to be at least on 2.1 to make this happen. Rob knows about this technique.

Dennis - can you shed some light on why you would move away from OG to do this?

I haven't got a complete set of requirements yet but the functionality provided by OGs group events seems pretty limited. I don't see any RSVP mechanism, which is the main concern. CiviEvent seems to provide everything without the granularity in access control that OG provides. I'd like to hear other solutions but, like I said, details on requirements are sketchy now.

Can you use Calendar and RSVP modules?

I'd like to stick with CiviEvent because it has other functions we are looking for and having them all in one package makes sense.
