I have two definitions of custom data:

Registrant Data has fields: Emergency Contact Name and Emergency Contact Relationship (e.g. Friend, Spouse, etc.).
Member Data has fields About Me, and Team Position.

I set up two profiles:

Registrant profile has fields: First name, last name, ..., Emergency Contact Name and Emergency Contact Relationship
Member Profile has fields: First name, last name, ..., Emergency Contact Name and Emergency Contact Relationship, bout Me, and Team Position

Note that Member Profile reuses fields defined in Registrant Data. Is this valid? Or is it necessary to define Emergency Contact Name and Emergency Contact Relationship in both custom data definitions and apply them separately in the corresponding profiles?

Custom data fields can be reused in profiles. The constraints that exist have to do with the type of record the custom field is "Used For" and the context that the Profile is used in:

* Profiles used "by themselves" to collect contact data are limited to custom fields Used For = Contacts, Individuals, Households, Organizations

* Profiles used to collect data in Online Contribution pages are limited to custom fields Used For = (all contact types listed above), Contributions, Memberships

* Profiles used to collect data in Event Registration pages are limited to custom fields Used For = (all contact types listed above), Participants
