Generating Receipt#

Hello,
for my business workflow I need to refer to receipt by number.  Is there anyway to show this in the receipt email?

I mostly have payments by cheque.

enable smarty debug and see if we expose the 'contribution id' to smarty. If so, you can use that id directly in the smarty template. if not, you'll need to expose the contribution id in the php code (via a hack or a hook) and then use it in smarty

there was a forum discussion on this (along with code) a couple of months back. a quick search did not find it :(
