Smarty errors in CiviCRM on subsite

CiviCRM stopped working on a subsite and I get Smarty errors every time I try to do anything in CiviCRM.

(Not sure exactly when but I suspect it goes back to the Drupal 5 to 6 and CiviCRM 1.9 to 2 upgrades. Those upgrades brought us several losses in functionality on or main site so it's likely that the subsites were broken as well but I didn;'t notice because of the problems with the main site until trying to do a subsite mailing this week.)


Attempting to do a New Mailing, here's what I get after step 2 of 5:

The directories do exist and the permissions are configured properly.

I did search and couldn't find quite the same problem posted anywhere.

Thanks in advance for any ideas or help.
My worst fear is that the rhythm really is going to get me.

what version of CiviCRM and Drupal are you running. Can you please fill out your forum profile

Note that support for versions 2.0 and earlier is quite limited

Sorry about that. Profile updated.

I did just notice one weird thing: while on the main site, CiviCRM pages say "powered by CiviCRM 2.1.1" at the bottom; the subsite in question says "powered by CiviCRM 2.0.1" in the footer.

Running the upgrade script for the subsite yields this error message:

Database check failed - looks like you have already upgraded to the latest version (v2.1) of the database.
