PHP version is missing zip functionality... uninstall CiviCRM from the Joomla...
March 18, 2009, 10:44:50 pm
apache; mysql 5.0.45; php 5.2.6; joomla 1.5.9; civicrm 2.2.0

First installation attempt, i got this err msg:

Quote
Your PHP version is missing zip functionality. Please ask your system administrator / hosting provider to recompile PHP with zip support.

If this is a new install, you will need to uninstall CiviCRM from the Joomla Extension Manager.

I re-read the instructions and then did another manual install of the "alt" version.
I receive the same err msg. Please advise.

Looks like it is not using -alt package. Can you recheck path of alt install files.

that was my first reaction too. after i received the same msg, i went back and specifically looked at the package. the second upload was definitely the alt version. i made sure i did the uninstall from the first try and even scanned the dir to make suer there were no files still left. same msg. i also dumped my browser cache. i will try again this afternoon.

2nd and third attemps failed.

i checked php version. i had 5.1.x. i contacted my host and they updated to 5.2.9 php version. still no go.

i uploaded the alt version to the admin/com/cominstall/com_civicrm. then run the installer. i get this err:

Quote
        * JFTP::mkdir: Bad response
        * JFTP::chmod: Bad response
        * Component Install: Failed to create directory.: "/var/www/vhosts/withhopefoundation.org/httpdocs/components/com_civicrm"

my ftp setting in config are fine.
i tried creating the dirs manually, but then i get a "cannot copy file" err.
please  advise.

I can confirm that the alt install doesn't work for me either.

J1.5.9
Php 5.2.8
MySQL5
CENTOS 5.2 x86_64

So I upgrade php to include zip - but there are some issues with this apparently.
Anyway compiling zip into pph has done the trick here.

Regarding the php + zip problems.
This paragraph from the Joomla installation guide appears to be wrong or incomplete IMHO:

Quote
from (http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Joomla+Installation+Guide):
If you get the following error when installing or upgrading CiviCRM for Joomla! - you can downloading the alternate Joomla install file -
civicrm-2.2.xxx-joomla-alt.zip - which doesn't require built-in unzip functionality on your server. Remove the file
JOOMLA_ROOT/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm.zip and then repeat the install steps starting with step 3 above (if the script
finds this zip file then it will check for zip functionality, and you'll get this error message again).

1) At no point during my many failed installations did I find the com_civicrm in my <root>/administrator/components folder. I guess it
stopped before that point, but it just stayed in the /tmp folder I made as per installation recommendations.

2) It would appear that it's necessary to completely remove the entire com_civicrm folder (?), as both com_civicrm/civicrm.xml & com_civicrm/admin/configure.php refer to the zip.. My attempts to replace the zip file on server with an expanded folder failed.

So Indicating that the user should remove the entire com_civicrm folder, to be replaced with the alt version would seem to be appropriate.. That seems to be what eventually solved my install.

Of course.. I could be misunderstanding things.. I am most avowedly not an expert.
