SMTP error message
March 23, 2009, 12:04:56 pm
So after a few weeks of trial and error getting email to work for CiviCRM I am at a loss. From what I can tell I have successfully used all the correct SMTP settings that HostMonster provided for me but I continue to get this error message: [SMTP: recipient is not recognized (code: 550, response: Verification failed for No Such User Here Sender verify failed)]

I understand there are other forum posts on here with the same error but none of them were any help in fixing this problem. What further information do you need from me to figure this out? Thanks!

That error usually means that the FROM email address used when you attempt to send mail is NOT a valid sender based on HostMonster's rules. Many ISPs require that the sender email address be a "local email account" that they host for you. They block any other senders to avoid being used as a relayer of spam.

So ... what function are you using to attempt to send mail? If you are using Admin CiviCRM >> Global Settings >> Outbound Mail >> Send Test Email - then CiviCRM will use the primary email associated with your login as the sender (for version 2.2.0 and prior).

Note that we have changed "Send Test Email" for the upcoming 2.2.1 release to use the configured default FROM address for your site (see Admin CiviCRM >> Domain Information >> System-generated Mail Settings).

Basically you need verify that the sender email address being used is a valid sender account. If that's NOT the problem - the you're best bet is to ask HostMonster to check their mail server log to give you more info on the error and it's cause.

For a while I was using our Google Apps email to great success. Never had a problem with anything. Now I am attempting to just use the local host and imagine it is a server issue I need to talk to HostMonster and see what's up. Thanks.
