Neither zip nor alt-zip worked with directory install

I was trying to upgrade to the latest version of CiviCRM and neither the unpacked zip nor the alt-zip worked both drew the zip error message. Why can't I install from the zip file?

Did you try the zip option, and not remove the civicrm.zip file? If so the presence of the .zip file is causing the alt-zip script to follow the same logic as the zip script. Both install scripts share the same installation code: their behaviour will be identical if the .zip file is present. Remove it and rerun the alt-zip script - that should avoid the error.

It's always a good idea to clean up after failed install attempts - it's hard to predict what the state-of-play is.
