Civi won't install on joomla! 1.5.9
March 28, 2009, 05:28:56 am
Hi,

I did a fresh install from Joomla.
After the install is finished I delete the installation folder.
I then log in as admin on the administrator pages.
The very next thing I do next trying to install civicrm-2.2.1-joomla.zip

After a long wait..Joomla! returns to the main dashboard.
I've also tried to install it from HTTP and from the directory, but I can't get it to install.

I hear a lot of good stuff about Civi but so far I havent been able to install it for over 2 days of testing and playing around with it.

Any suggestions on how to get this installed would be great!

Danny

Have you followed the installation directions in the online documentation?
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Joomla+Installation+Guide

You have to install by directory, as the package is too large to install using the normal browse>upload>install tool. Install by directory involves uploading the package to a folder on your hosting space (preferably the existing /tmp/ folder), unzipping it, and then running the installation through the Joomla extension install tool.

Do you have errors?
Do you have CiviCRM menu items in the Components menu?
Can you see if files were copied to components/com_civicrm/ and administrator/components/com_civicrm/?

I have the same problem.  I follow the steps as indicated and after a while, my browser freezes then I get a page saying the browser can't load a page.  If I refresh, I'm still in Joomla.  In each of the directories, (/components  and administrator/components) I see civicrm.xml.  There is nothing in the Joomla components menu.  I'm used IE7.   When I tried again with Firefox, I got  "-1 - An error has occurred. It was not possible to copy the selected file."

Sounds like you're timing out. There are some recommended php settings (memory_limit, max_execution_time) listed in the documentation you should implement. If you're using low-quality shared hosting, you may continue to have problems (or not be able to modify those settings). CiviCRM is more robust and requires more resources than most Joomla extensions, thus requiring a certain threshold in hosting environment.

I figured as much and have sent a message to our host.  I really hope we can get this going, as I'm excited to use CiviCRM!

Some shared hosting will allow php overrides via an .htaccess or php.ini file. Ask about that.
Even with overrides, you may still run into issues depending on the quality of the hosting. But improving those php settings gives you a better chance of getting it working.
