CiviCase fields available to Profile
March 31, 2009, 05:51:56 am
Hi

I was wondering if anyone could comment on whether extending the Profile capability to work on Case/Case Activity/Case Role fields has been considered for future releases? This is something we would be interested in contributing to/sponsoring.

Thanks

Hi Marcus, I don't understanding how this would happen. Mainly because one profile per person but that person could have many cases.
One thing that is not supported but would be nice to have is custom data at the 'case level' as well as activity level.
Is that what you are referring to?

Cheers,

Custom data at the case level would make my life much better I have no idea if that is feasible, but would be interested at looking at it if it is. I wonder if there is a reason why it was not done.

My understanding of Profile pages is maybe slightly different to yours, but I understood that they can be used in a number of Civi entities like Event and contribution to build a 'custom' data entry or view page. We would like to do a similar thing for the case module so that we can limit down the fields shown to people. Have I got the wrong end of the stick about how it can be used?

Two reasons:
* The bias of the model is to NOT store a lot of data at the case level - but rather to see cases as a sequence of interactions (case activities). The custom data needs are then handled at the activity level - generally by specific activity type.

* The initial sponsor / setting didn't require it. :-)

Yes - that is one key use of profiles. Implementing them for a case would potentially be a complex task since case data exists at multiple levels (affects a bunch of different record types). Perhaps sketching out a profile form that you wish you could present for case data entry - with the fields / elements you'd want to include - would help others understand the requirement better.

OK, I will give some thought to a good scenario and then map it out to post. But in essence, we would be looking to getting custom data fields at the case level and then creating a profile in order to allow someone to create a new case populating just the fields relevant to them (we would not need some of the fields like details and duration and 'actual date'). Will do some thinking and post again.
