CiviCRM and recurring payments
July 26, 2007, 07:44:25 am
Does CiviCRM integrate well with Paypal with regard to recurring payments or is their a transaction handler that is better suited for this type of integration? It is my understanding that the current CiviCRM/Paypal relationship does not make it possible to create payment forms with the recurring option on them without requiring all users to go directly to the Paypal site to create a account. We would prefer to allow our users to create a Paypal account without feeling like they've left our Web site regardless of whether they are making a recurring payment or a one-time payment. Is this possible? Is there a better transaction handler out there that allows us to handle both recurring and one-time payments without requiring our site's visitors to create a special account on the financial transaction handler's Website?

PayPal only supports recurring payments using their "Website Payments Standard" service - which as you've noted "forces" the user to complete the payment transaction on PayPal's website. We are "hoping" that they will add recurring payment support to PayPal Professional at some point !!

Marshall Newrock from Ideal Solutions has contributed a plugin for Authorize.net - and has added support for recurring payments in the 1.8 release: http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-2009 . I haven't tried the Authorize.net "flow" but my understanding is that the transaction is done "behind the scenes" (like PayPal Pro) and the donor doesn't leave your website.

This is new functionality - and it would be great if your organization would help out by trying it and working with Marshall to identify and fix issues (if any).

Has there been an update on this issue since 2007. I will start a new issue but in case one of the two of you know they answer I am also posting here.

I am looking for paypal recurring payments that do not require the member to okay them past the time they are set up.

Thank you so much Eileen.

I have looked through that thread and my understanding is that the civiCRM paypal recurrent handler is not quite ready. I am on a month long project and I have been looking at MoneyScripts, but I love the power that comes from civiCRM. Can you tell me if the paypal recurrent project would require paypal pro or some other paid manager? I do not know if it will help me this time but I bet I will be able to use that information in a subsequent project.

Actually - just re-reading - you don't require recurring for memberships - just recurring.

Recurring contributions are currently (v3.1.3) supported for Paypal Standard and Paypal Pro. There are other options (e.g. Payflow Pro, Authorize.net) that are close to completion but maybe need some extra $$ to push them over the line.

Eileen,

I am a little dense as it is 2:30 in the am. What is the difference between recurring and recurring for memberships. I assumed that I need recurring for memberships because I want to block access to the site for any non-payers.

Actually - I just tried on the sandbox

http://sandbox.civicrm.org/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&action=preview&id=4

and you can create a membership page with a recurring transaction - I don't think the membership is automatically renewed when your payment is processed but perhaps it is
