CiviEvent - Participant Role

What is the purpose of the "Participant Role"?  Can someone select a "role" when they register?  Can the profiles that are displayed during registration change as a function of the role.  For example, the questions asked of a youth delegate are different from those asked of an adult delegate?  I am running civi 2.2.0 with drupal.

yes, You can configured common role for all participant when they register online,
go to  CiviEvent -> Manage Events -> Configure -> Event Information and Settings check "Participant Role" select field.

Also to provide option to select role during registration, you need to create profile add participant role field in that profile and configure it for event registration.
Take a look for Online Registration settings.
