Custom relationship types and "find target contact" search box
April 02, 2009, 01:26:26 pm
In 2.2 and reproduced on the CiviCRM demo, if you create a custom relationship type and under "Contact Type A & B" you select "any contact type" then go to add a relationship for a contact, the drop-down search box called "find target contact" doesn't work as expected. It doesn't provide suggestions as you type as it does in other places.

Once you specify which types of contacts the relationship is between, then it works fine.  So maybe the fix for this is to make the "Contact Type A - B" fields required so you have to select a contact type for contacts A and B. This solution may be problematic if a contact can have the same type of relationship with an individual and an organization but I can't think of one that fits that edge case.

Thoughts?

Tony - This is definitely a bug, although I agree that it's an edge case. Fortunately, the submitted search does work so you can create relationships of this type (just without the help you get from the auto-suggest widget). Since we are replacing the dojo version of this widget with a jQuery version - I don't think it's worth fixing this in 2.2.

I've filed an issue for 2.3 so we remember to make sure the new widget works for this case:

strange: in my case (CiviCRM 2.2.1, drupal 6.10), when i try to add a relationship, the search dialog neither suggests any matches, nor does it find contacts when i supply the full name. i get the following error message:

"No matching results for
    * Name like: undefined"

debugging & backtrace enabled, but no error shows up. seems the form doesn't actually submit the search value...

i'll try to look into this further when i find time, but i'm quiet busy right now and relationships aren't the most important thing for me.

oops, i'm sorry; please disregard my above post. apparently this is a browser issue. i was using firefox 'minefield' (alpha version). when i tried the same thing with opera, it worked. opera doesn't display the search widget, but when i type in the full name, CiviCRM finds it and i can create the relationship.
