Accessibility for blind & vision impaired?
April 04, 2009, 10:55:20 am
Hello all,

I would like to get feedback from any blind or vision impaired users of CiviCRM, both on the customer side and on the administrative side. I would like to find out how well a blind and low vision group can set up, maintain and use this program. Likewise, if any of the producers have any experience or input from low vision users, I would appreciate knowing about it.

I am working on behalf of a small group that is searching for the means to offer secure features for membership renewals, new membership applications and corporate sponsorships. We are also looking for a secure merchants account for accepting donations, fund raising sales of products and services as well as an occasional auction format. We may add a services referral feature which would involve the handling of general but sensitive personal and medical information.

We have one main state chapter and several small local chapters. We would like to offer each of our small chapters a sub-folder web account under the state's main site and extend the CiviCRM service to them for individual membership and fund raising use and also to a couple of chapters that have their own separate sites. From what I've seen, most of this seems feasible, but, the big question right now is 'how accessible is the program'?

Thank you.

We had someone who is experienced with web accessibility do an audit of the application about 12 months ago. We made a number of changes in our markup based on his recommendations. However we have not gotten feedback (good or bad) on these forums from folks using screen readers - so I suspect there are some (possibly many) problem areas in the current release. I think we will need an active partner with experience in this area - and users who are willing to work through the issues with us - to collaborate and get things to the next level.

Note that we are also using an increasing number of Ajax widgets - AND switching to the jQuery library for our next release (2.3). I just did some quick googling on accessibility and jQuery - and it looks like there's work being done to make sure the much of the library complies with ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards - http://www.w3.org/TR/wai-aria/

Would be great if others in the community have experienced with the current state of things for CiviCRM to post here.

Thank you so much for the quick response. I've forwarded the information to the chairman of our web committee.

We are still shopping around for a provider for a merchants account. Are there any posts that offer input on providers and reviews? I haven't found any yet.

Documentation on payment processors is here:

... you could search for "payment processor" and specific processor names on this forum for CiviCRM specific posts / issues.
