Odd behaviour - New Individual and Matching
April 04, 2009, 10:43:29 pm
Hi - a bit surprised at the outcome on demo.

New Individual - use same first+last name of someone already in system (eg Chris Adams)

Hit Save - no reaction re Matching Contact.

Strict Rules set to Email (10) First (7) Last (7) = threshold = 10

1. for admin related interactive screens (i.e. contact edit), we use the fuzzy default rule rather than the strict rule

2. in this case we used this rule:

http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/deduperules?reset=1&action=browse (first: 5, last: 7, email: 10, total: 20)

i changed the total to 10 and it worked fine

Thnaks Lobo - I had read the instructions for once and the help '?' on Global Settings >> Merge says "The default 'Strict' rule is automatically used when new contacts are created"

And I would consider adding someone using the New Individual menu block, or New Individual menu link as just that.

I am not trying to persuade you to make any changes.

But also I think the rules should be shipped out with setting that will preclude the creation of contacts with same emails as the 'default' perhaps.

wanna suggest some changes to the help text. Here is the current help text

Code: [Select]
Manage the rules used to identify potentially duplicate contact records. Scan for duplicates using a selected rule and merge duplicate contact data as needed. Click Edit Rule to review or modify the rules for each type of contact. You will generally want to maintain both 'fuzzy' and 'strict' rules for each contact type. (learn more...)

'Strict' rules should be configured with a relatively tight definition of what constitutes a match (for example... email address + first and last name for Individuals). The default 'Strict' rule is automatically used when new contacts are created (including contacts created by constituents during online contributions, etc.). They are also used when you Import contacts. You can only have one default 'Strict' rule for each contact type.

'Fuzzy' rules should be configured with a looser definition of what constitutes a 'match'. The default Fuzzy rule is automatically used to check for possible duplicates when contacts are added or edited via the user interface. You'll probably also want to use a Fuzzy rule when scanning your database for possible duplicates. Click Use Rule to scan for duplicate contacts (of that contact type) using the selected rule.

here is another post that might help/clarify stuff

Sure - maybe change

"when new contacts are created (including contacts created by constituents during online contributions, etc.)"

to

"when new contacts are created through online registrations including Events, Memberships and Contribution pages.
