CiviCRM vanishes into thin air.

Hi everybody,

We thought we had CiviCRM up and running within Drupal without a problem. And when you run it from the localhost (log in on the server with remote desktop) there truly is no problem. But then we decided to move on with the project and open up our "homemade" server to the world. When you visit the page trough the internet the civicrm link in the administrator menu is visible.

First time we clicked on it, it served the CiviCRM home but not quite as its supposed to. The images weren't visible and all we got were red crosses. After that when we tried to navigate further into CiviCRM it vanished into thin air. There was no sign that civiCRM was ever installed within drupal. The link disappeared and there was no sign of CiviCRM in the modules section. But when we checked all files were still in the modules directory.

Second time CiviCRM didn't vanish, but it was unable to serve any page besides the homepage. All we got is a drupal errorpage.

We are using;
WinXP "server"
XAMPP 1.7.0 (Apache HTTPD 2.2.11 + Openssl 0.9.8i, MySQL 5.1.30, PHP 5.2.8)
Drupal 6.10
CiviCRM 2.1.6

Since it's our first time working with Drupal and CiviCRM we don't really have a clue of how this is possible.
Is it a problem with Drupal? Or is it a CiviCRM problem? Could it be the server itself or Apache configuration?

If there is anyone who could give us a hand with were to start we would be very grateful.

Femke.

Femke,

Hard to tell what was the specific problem of CiviCRM disappearing. However, initial problems with images not showing up might mean that resource URLs have been set incorrectly - this happens when you install from one URL and than try to use CiviCRM from another.

Second time problem makes me think that base URL for CiviCRM is probably somehow wrong. Try rebuilding menu (civicrm/menu/rebuild?reset=1) and see what happens.

Thx,
m

When I try to navigate to rebuild link I still get a page not found error.

So what you're saying is the installation shouldn't be done on the server itself through localhost? But over the web?

I'm not sure what you specific installation conditions are, I also don't think I understand what do you mean by "over the web". However, trying to answer your question - yes, instead of running the installer using "localhost" in address, just run it using fully qualified domain name.

Or stay with current pattern, but apply these instructions when switching your installation to new address.

Thx,
m
