civicrm-2.2.2-joomla-alt.zip starts working, but dies with the following error:

Component Install: DB function failed with error number 2006

I have tried changing the .htaccess (and correlative changes to php.ini) as follows:

php_value memory_limit 64M
php_value register_globals off
php_value max_execution_time 2000

The installation dies at the same step every time.

MySQL 5.0.2
