I can't send bulk emails and I can't even send an email to an individual in civicrm.  They just bounce and the email goes on hold.

I got the following message when I tried to send directly to an individual:

"The mail library returned the following error message:
Failed to add recipient: emailhere@gmail.com [SMTP: recipient is not recognized (code: 550, response: relaying mail to gmail.com is not allowed)]"

Can you help the noob?

most likely your smtp server is not gmail, and the below is your from address which your smtp server does not like

You should use an email address which has an account with your smtp provider for your from address
