installation error - internal server error and Your php version is missing....

I am so stuck, tried so many different options from the postings:

1) tried using the alt zip file unzipped at /public_html/joomla/com_civicrm_alt/, I get the below error:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, cgiadmin@yourhostingaccount.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

2) when i use the regular zip file from /public_html/joomla/com_civicrm
I always get this error:
Your PHP version is missing zip functionality. Please ask your system administrator / hosting provider to recompile PHP with zip support.

If this is a new install, you will need to uninstall CiviCRM from the Joomla Extension Manager.

I also unzipped /public_html/joomla/com_civicrm/admin/civicrm.zip

This option also creates the CiviCRM component in the drop down menu in joomla, but when i look at it, it brings up an empty page

Im completely lost either way! ???

Go with first (alt) option.

unzip it inside joomla/tmp/ directory, and use "install from directory".

Check the installation doc here - http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Joomla+Installation+Guide

I can't comment on all the errors estuffs is getting, but I have found that the alt script throws up the "PHP version is missing zip functionality" error when the civicrm.zip file is sitting in <Joomla! directory>/administrator/components/com_civicrm (I think that's the directory).

estuffs, did you run the normal install and then the alt install? If you did, and didn't remove the civicrm.zip file, then you'll get the same error.

Ken

(Deepak, Kurund - can I suggest adding a note to the upgrade page to warn people that before they use the alt method, that they need to clean up the results of the default install?)

Hopefully someone can help me out here.
I've tried the installation, uploaded the unzipped Joomla package to my tmp directory, tried to install, get the same message about PHP and zip functionality.  I went as suggested and deleted the com_civicrm directories in the components directory as well as in the administrator/components directory with still the same error.  Any ideas on what I need to do to install civicrm for the first time?
