reports with Crystal - how to get data
April 22, 2009, 09:08:50 am
I'm trying to learn how to change the Crystal Reports that I've made for Raiser's Edge work with CiviCRM. I have "Crystal Reports for Blackbaud" version 8.5

In Raiser's Edge the basic approach is you export an MDB file and run your report off of that, but this approach has to be changed for CiviCRM. For one thing, I think I read that CiviCRM's built in Export feature doesn't export Relationships yet (our reports use relationship info very heavily). I know that one of the ways Crystal reports can work is to send SQL requests to the database, but I'm not sure if that's a good way to go...

Any of you reports experts know what to do?

oh, and if it would be easier to use BIRT instead I'm willing to try that.

I am not familiar with Crystal report, but can't you directly access CiviCRM database (MySQL) and generate reports. Have you searched in Crystal Reports doc or Google for "connecting to MySQL databases" or something like that.

I have played a bit with Crystal Reports (not a lot!) and I'd imagine there is a possibility to link directly to the MySQL database. That is probably the best way forward. You will probably have some possibilties with 'connections' to different types of databases, and MySQL should be one of them.

Good luck!
