Can it do this?
April 22, 2009, 12:52:58 pm
Hi, new to CiviCRM. I like the idea, but I need to figure a few things out. I'm building a site for a NP. Functionality needs to include:

Full info website for "non-registered users" (have set-up Drupal 6x for that)
Calendar of events (was hoping to use CiviCRM for that, as it can integrate with upcoming events)
Donate Option
Advocacy Letters (looks like CiviCRM does this too)
A membership area where paying members of the NP group can access individual features: member list, etc, announcements, etc.)

And a separate admin area where the NP group can manage the site. Ie: the Admin can make all changes, but the paying "membership level" people can make any admin changes, but they can see one level deeper into the website.

I know this is a lot, and I'm a noob to this, but it is hard to see if CiviCRM can do this within the confines of Drupal and how to make it possible. Thanks for any help in advance!

Hey RT.

Make sure you install Views 2, date/calendar, and many other powerful Drupal modules (too long to list)

Check here to see how to use the calendar module to show CiviEvents. http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,5804.0.html

CiviContribute - a bunch of features here including online donations and membership sign-ups

Advocacy Letters
Depends on what you're trying to do. If you're thinking of people filling out forms that get emailed directly to a "target" like a senator/representative, no, not yet. There are some workarounds that you may want to consider. I mentioned one here: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,7576.0.html and Xavier had some good options here: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,2360.msg27294.html#msg27294

So it just comes down to what you are trying to do. That being said, this is a common request and it will come eventually.  If your organization has resources, please consider hiring a developer or a group like DharmaTech (shameless plug) to make these features a reality in CiviCRM.

With a module that is now core CiviCRM, you can sync CiviCRM membership types to Drupal roles. So this allows you to have members' only content on your website, for example, that is synced with their CiviMember status in the database. really cool.

Yes, you can either do this with the module i mentioned above or using access control lists and profiles to limit access to certain data in your site. But it sounds like the membership syncing module above would work fine for you.

Hope this helps
