CiviMail from address
May 06, 2009, 12:29:53 pm
Hi there,

On CiviMail in 2.2.2 the only option given to me in the drop down box for the from field (page 3 of set-up) is the one configured under administer civiCRM /domain information.

I believe this used to be a text field where you could enter the e-mail address you desired but it defaulted to that e-mail address? It would be preferable if that were the case.

You can predefine From email addresses: check http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/options/from_email_address?group=from_email_address&reset=1
For more info on this feature do check: http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-3552

Thanks. I hadn't spotted that. I can see advantages and disadvantages of being limited to a default list but as long as you consider that to be a relatively static set up I'll write about it as is

Perhaps an option to have the list be determined by authorized CiviMail users would be helpful.  We do occasionally send out for another person, but we could authorize them for CiviMail.   It is also, not that big a deal for us to hard code a list, but feeding from CiviMail authorized would be fancier and more user friendly.

Yes, Kurund's point is you can enter the acceptable From addresses as an option group

Testing in v2.2.8 (I have not yet tested in v2.2.9 but I see no relevant fix in the change log, and I also understand that this version is no longer supported, but perhaps a similar issue exists in v3.0...):

In CiviMail's "Mailing Content (step 3 of 5)" the From Email Address has a blue square question mark [?] that opens to read:

Quote
By default, CiviCRM uses the primary email address of the logged in user as the FROM address when sending emails to contacts. However, users with Administer CiviCRM permission can configure one or more general email addresses that can be selected as an alternative.

But in fact, it appears that the primary email address of the logged in user is not available; rather, only the from_email_address option group are available.

If I'm not wrong,
This is feature used for "Send Email To Contacts" not for CiviMail

related issues might be :
http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-4336
http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-2368

For CiviMail :
We are picking up default From Email Address and which is also same for domain.

So basically default from email is used for mailing as default and when you set any email address as default here :
http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/options/from_email_address?group=from_email_address&reset=1
which automatically update your domain information, also you can have more From Email Addresses.

So to get logged in user email for CiviMail, you need to make entry in From Email Addresses.

related issue is here : http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-3552

hope this help

Hi Kiran,

Thanks for your reply.

The issue for me is the comment in the blue [?] "By default, CiviCRM uses the primary email address of the logged in user as the FROM address when sending emails to contacts."  This help text is used in two places, one in which it is appropriate and one in which it is not:
  • On "Send Email to Contacts" at /civicrm/activity/add?atype=3&action=add&reset=1&context=standalone the comment applies as on that page the logged in user's email address is the default and the from_email_address option group is also available.
  • In CiviMail's "Mailing Content (step 3 of 5)" at /civicrm/mailing/send?_qf_Upload_display=true&qfKey=... the first paragraph of the comment doesn't apply as the logged in user's email address is not the default nor is it available (unless configured in the from_email_address option group).
This has confused my users.

I just verified that the same "issue" exists in v3.0.0.  What I believe needs to happen is either the comment must be very specific that the first paragraph only applies to "Send Email to Contacts" and not to CiviMail.  I have offered better wording in http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-5205
