Many problems installing onto Joomla.
May 09, 2009, 07:25:57 pm
I have tried several methods of installing civiCRM and each has failed.  I have thoroughly looked through the forums for help but nothing that has helped others has helped my situation.

1) When I install CiviCRM normally through the upload package file, the first time, it timed out.  Every other time after that, it simply sends me back to the Joomla Administrator control panel after a few minutes of loading.
2) When installing from URL, it tells me "Unknown Archive Type."  I've tried the sourceforge url and all those that were on the forums.
3) When installing from a directory it says "Please enter a package directory."  I installed the unpacked files it into my tmp directory but it still won't recognize it.

I am completely baffled and a little stressed.  The component is a perfect fit for our site and I had it up and running on localhost but it just won't go onto my server.

Any guidance?

Hi, preis253 -

Take a look at this post; this method worked for me!

http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,7894.0.html

If you are starting from zero and want to install Joomla AND CiviCRM together, at the same time, then you can use JoomCivi, announced here:

Good luck!

I believe there should be further warnings that Civicrm is not fully available for Joomla.  This is probably one of the most difficult products to install.  If you try to install via Joomla extensions, know that there is a limit to uploads with is usually 5MB for one file, and 8MB for multiple files.  Civicrm is at least 10.5MB.

Joomcivi is a great start; however, if you have Joomla already installed, you're still in the dark.

Civicrm appears to be a great product, but it seems Drupal may be the only way to make its use in reach.

It is difficult to do in case of some of the shared hosting servers but you can use some professional services to get it implemented. Otherwise if you would like to try it yourself. Try and download Joomla to local server install civicrm and upload it back to the web server. This should get you going.

Another *really* helpful tool is to read the installation documentation, which walks you through the install from directory option. Correct, you cannot install from the browse-upload-install option because the package is too large. Problem with that? Get a new hosting provider and configure php to accommodate the larger size.

preis253:
The error you received when trying the install from directory option is because you uploaded the package but didn't unpack it.

dags:
CiviCRM *is* fully available for Joomla. It's ok to be ignorant of how to install it. But to blame CiviCRM or Joomla when you don't know what you're talking about is lame. Just because CiviCRM can't install using the first installation option (browse-upload) on most servers doesn't mean it's not "fully available." It just means you need to read directions.

And I'm just curious -- did you try installing it on Drupal? Did you look at the installation instructions for Drupal? Do you realize that the installation process is remarkably similar to Joomla, in terms of needing to upload and unpack the files before installing?

preis253: Did you finally get it installed?

FYI, the update from 2.2.3 to 2.2.5 also was successful - if it all seems overwhelming, take a deep breath as you read each step of the instructions ...and you'll do just fine!
