Volunteer hours/ Donations for Credits ?

Hi,
I'm volunteering for an organization that would like to use CiviCRM to manage their volunteer hours. The set up seems to become a bit complicated as they wish to use the hours that volunteers serve as credits towards earning different premiums (bicycle parts).

Is there anyone who is currently using the contribute model in a similar way or does anyone have a suggestions as to how this might work?

To explain a little better
Volunteers will volunteer at different intervals of time (4 hours or so) and after they accrue 50 hours they will earn a bike. Once they are granted a bike we want the ability to subtract these hours and if possible leave the balance to be earned towards future premiums.

Let me know if you have any ideas.

Probably using Activities and then build a Custom Search on this that would have to be checked to see who has undertaken over 50 hours might be the simplest approach

We're also interested in tracking paid staff and volunteer hours.  Other than possibly using CiviCRM are there other favorite PHP / MySql / Opensource favorite time tracking applications?
