Account already exists when it shouldn't.
May 11, 2009, 10:47:47 am
I hope this is in the right place -- if not please correct me.

My main goal is to construct a list of contacts that have signed up for one or more of our newsletters (we have somewhere between 5 and 16).  We want at least Name and Email (required) but would also be keen on grabbing other user info if they're willing to provide it (address, city, state, phone, etc).  Upon registering I have them added to a big "people getting emailed" group, and am planning on adding them to other groups based on what newsletters they want to sign up for.

I thought the best way to do this would be to make a profile including a multiple check box with options to sign up for each newsletter and then expose the form to the front end.  However, each time I try to enter in information, I get the message "An account already exists with the same information."

Can someone point me in the right direction or offer suggestions on what I might be doing incorrectly?  Am I going about this in entirely the wrong manner?

edit:
Joomla 1.5.9
CiviCRM 2.2

ha - was about to say yes, then saw joomla - it still sounds right to me but happy to be put in my place - you need to avoid trying to create new contacts from a logged in user - so you may need to open another browser for testing? But yes, checkbox, then build SmartGroup off that information to then use for CiviMailing out your newsletters.

Tried it in a different browser and different computer.  Still getting the same error message.  I'm starting to get the feeling I should migrate over to Drupal and play with that -- this site is still in early stages of development, and it seems like civiCRM plays better w/ Drupal.  Any other ideas though as to why I might be getting this error message?  For the record, I'm not having users sign up to Joomla, just exposing elements of civiCRM to generic website viewers through Joomla's menu options.

Ahah! I figured out my issue I believe.  I modified the default STRICT settings for Individuals and now everything seems to be all spiffy jiffy.

Hey JMenn,

I think I might be having a similar issue - My contribute page wont except emails of users with drupal accounts using the same email.

What menu setting did you change the default STRICT setting for individuals?

Many thanks

Curtis

Administer CiviCRM >> Find and Merge Duplicate Contacts under the configure section heading (I don't know if this has changed in CiviCRM 3.0 or not, I'm waiting for it to go stable before upgrading).

I'm not sure if this will help with the contribution issue or not, my organization hasn't  had to use anything besides some profiles, basic groups, and CiviEvent.  Hope this helps in some way.
