Thanking donors/members

We are currently in the development stage of Civi for our member/donor organization.  Big question for us...what is the easiest way to generate thank you letters, aside from exporting fields to Word and using a mail merge?  Doesn't CiviCRM have any letter generating capabilities?

doing a CSV export and a mail merge is your best option right now.

However it would be super super awesome if you could build (or sponsor a developer) to build this functionality into CiviCRM.  This would help us close the gap significantly with other commercial systems

Alfred of the River Valley Tech Collective recently submitted a patch that allows you to create a PDF letter in a very similar way that you send an email.  You can insert tokens for contact info and save the letters as templates.  Pretty cool: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,7917.0.html

I haven't tried it yet but it seems to me the only limitation here would be the available tokens.  For example, you can't currently include a token for their recent contribution to say something like "thank you for your recent gift of {amount}."

But it is definitely a cool contributed feature.

hope it helps
