Hello - new Drupal site going up with CIVICRM could use some thoughts
May 17, 2009, 05:49:18 pm
I am working on a Drupal site to use the CIVICRM and Drupal organic groups.

-----------------------------------

I would appreciate any thoughts on whether I should try to build with one integrated Drupal/CIVICRM database or provide a database for each separately.

I have been instructed NOT to go ahead with a Drupal/CIVICRM install until I have a definitive answer.

I just need to know whether it is best to include CIVCRM into Drupal database or make a separate CIVICRM database.

I'm concerned, because Drupal comes out with a security release so frequently I don't know how the CIVCRM database will be affected until it's on a working site.

I make all security updates ASAP.  I cannot wait around for fixes from CIVICRM if I have an integrated Drupal/CIVICRM shared database and I have to have a securtiy patch from CIVICRM as well.

I'm just waiting to hear on this.   If anyone knows "Jack" about this, please give me a response.

Thanks

Drupal and CiviCRM updates will not interfere with one another in the same database.

The first reasons I can think of you might separate the DBs would be

1. Ease of backups (mysqldump my_drupal > drupal.sql) of the separate databases.

2. Size (we have one customer with 2x Drupal ~200MB, and 1xCiviCRM @ ~250MB). But this isn't so much a MySQL limit, it's really just (1).

Most sites I install now I use the same DB for both, for ease of management. (You can always back up just the tables for drupal or civicrm separately.)

Thank you very much...

The part about being able to use one DB and separate the Drupal from CIVICRM will resolve most issues.

Again, thanks very much
