Source codes field on contribution pages
May 17, 2009, 10:25:52 pm
I have been reviewing a lot of use cases for CiviContribute lately, and the one thing that did not make sense to me was why there is not a field in when setting up contribution pages for source code. Contribution records allow for source codes per contribution, so it seemed a logical feature that contribution pages have a source code field.

I understand that CiviCRM allows people to search for contributions by contribution page, but if an organization is exporting contribution info to import into another system they will want a source code for where that contribution came from. This seems like a small feature which can be added in the next release of CiviCRM and there may be code that an organization/developer/firm has already developed which can do this.

Check:

http://civicrm.org/node/562

which attempts to address this question a wee bit. I suspect we'll introduce a campaign object that stores this data in a future release (would be great for trellon to sponsor / work on this module)

note that contribution does have  a source field that can be used to store a source code.

We are looking at options for doing this for a client now. I will let you know if we run into any issues. If we are successful, we definitely will contribute the code back to the project.

Would be great if you could have the community / client spec process open and on the CiviCRM wiki so we can chime in and potentially generalize it so that it is a bit more applicable to most of the civicrm user base. Doing it this way makes it much easier to integrate the code/design with the existing code base

Will do. I will set up that page and the redirect field page now. Thanks for the advise.

I posted a basic description of how i would see this working on the wiki which you can find here:

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Source+code+field+for+CiviContribute+pages

I would love feedback or suggestions on where to start.
