Problem with "authenticated" role and ACLs
May 18, 2009, 03:18:19 pm
I've got a civicrm 2.2 installation with 2 custom field groups and 2 profiles that are used on user registration and user edit.

When i try to set access to the custom data groups and profiles to "authenticated" a drupal authenticated user cannot access them from their user/edit screen and instead get an ugly error:

Sorry. A non-recoverable error has occurred.
The requested Profile (gid=1) is disabled OR it is not configured to be used for 'Profile' listings in its Settings OR there is no Profile with that ID OR you do not have permission to access this profile. Please contact the site administrator if you need assistance.

There are two issues here:
1) i should not be getting this error from my reading of available documentation including the onscreen help text
2) this error sucks.  Why not just give a more standard "Access denied" error that then ads some detail for contacting the administrator.  As I've indicated before, CiviCRM's end user facing errors are terrifying and confusing to end users, even to site administrators.  The site theme should not disappear and give way to a white screen with the yellow error box and return to home page message.  Instead a clear message should be presented within the applicable theme, and offer some way to contact a site administrator with the information. something like "We're sorry, the action you have attempted was not completed do to a problem or misconfiguration. Please contact the [link to site admin or contact form:site administrator] with the information below: [an error message for the site administrator]"

It's good to paste the urls people are struggling with as the description of the screen may not mean the same thing to everyone (I realise clean vs grubby urls can confuse things but it's in the right direction.)

Do you mean this screen gives the error?

http://domain.com/?q=user/1

And that the permissions you have given are:
access all custom data
profile listings and forms

I have a nasty feeling I saw another post with a similar problem to this. Are all the fields in the profile in question applied to Contacts/ Individuals?

1. Do your profile settings have "View/Edit User Account" enabled?

2. yes that error sucks and can be improved. How about contributing some resources (since CA does have a fair amount) to actually improve it. As with any other open source project, a patch is way more appreciated
