Hi When comparing our sites which are running different version of civicrm (2.2.3, 2.1.2) and in both of these sites the theme is set to garland, fluid with, but the search boxes on the find contacts screen are either run out of the content box (2.1.2) or make a scroll bar necessary to see the far right of the content (2.2.3). Is there a simple setting to change this? I notice the demo site does not have either of these problems.

I had a similar problem. I am running a modified LightFantastic theme in Drupal with CiviCRM as a module.
When I look at CiviCRM pages, they ran off the right side of the page because of the Drupal menu in the left margin blocks. The blocks can be enabled/disabled for specified pages, so I went back into Administer|Blocks and changed the settings for all the blocks in the left margin so that they were disabled for all CiviCRM pages (civicrm/*). This worked just fine, and I can get back to the regular Drupal pages through the "breadcrumbs" at the top of the page. So maybe if you deconflict your blocks, you will have enough room on the page to let CiviCRM work properly.

Hi,
It appears that the reason we have to scroll right to see all of the search boxes is that some of our group and tag names are too long. After shortening the longer names, the search boxes are displayed correctly.

The 2.0 entity diagram indicates the field length for the Group and Tag name is "VarChar(64)". None of our names are longer than 64 characters, so I'm not sure why we are having this problem. Perhaps all the names are stored in the same row? Or maybe we are off base in our assumption that the issue is related to the length of the names. Shortening them though, does work.

Can anyone shed any light on what might be happening here?

Hi Cynthia - Pretty sure you're problem is related to length of group names. We've modified the drop-down display with some css for 2.3 to prevent the problem - and there's an easy fix you can apply to 2.2.x sites here:
