allowable custom field values

I'm trying to enter values with special characters, dash and slash, in a custom data filed and I can't. I can't find an explanation in the docs of my proble so here I am. The fields are defined:

data type - alphanumeric, field type - multiselect
sample that causes problem - motor - electric/RH

Gets me this error message:

Please correct the following errors in the form fields below:
    * Please enter a valid value for this field.

Please try and recreate this issue on the public demo: http://demo.civicrm.org/drupal/

If it recreates - you can file an issue on the bug tracker with details on how you recreated it on the demo.
