[SOLVED] Tracking not working
May 20, 2009, 04:15:56 pm
I've sent out an actual mail (it was scheduled and completed, sent to various valid test email addresses, with one sent to a fake address) and opened them a certain number of times, clicked through a few times etc.. Only click-throughs are being reported accurately. Why is this?

Also I can't unsubscribe -- the email sent to the unsubscribe address generated by civimail bounces back as "target domain rejected the message", probably because the email doesn't exist, which is a problem; how will our subscribers be able to opt-out? Where can I find the HTML link that will unsubscribe members so I can use that instead?

Thanks for your time.

[SOLVED] Problems were that I moved to a new host and forgot to update the soap url and that civiSMTP had an issue with tildes (~) in URLs, which is now fixed. Huge thanks to Shane!

can you tell us specifically what is not being tracked accurately?  is it the report that says how many emails were sent or bounced?

unsubscribe is working according to our tests (just checked it). Can you please forward a copy of the email that was sent to the support address with all of the headers so we can see the unsubscribe address generated by civimail.

thx,

-Shane

I'm looking at the Report for the email. These results appear:
Intended recipients is correct.
Successful deliveries is not -- there was one fake address
Spooled emails is not correct -- once bounced for sure due to the above-mentioned fake address
Tracked opens is not correct -- we opened it at least 9 times in various email clients but it only shows 2
Click-throughs is correct.
Don't know about forwards.
Replies is not correct -- I get an error from Google Apps (what we use for our regular email), see below
Bounces is not correct -- there was one for sure
Unsubscribe requests is also not correct -- there was exactly one for sure but it shows none

Here's a copy of the email that bounced when I tried to reply to the mailing, below this is a copy of the email that was generated when I tried to unsubscribe:

Re: Tracking not working

it appears that you have an misconfigured domain in your civimail setup.  the reply, bounce, and unsubscribe addresses contain islonline.org and that is not mapped in the MX system to civismtp.uas.coop and therefore the bounces, replies and unsubscribes will not get to our servers and thus will not be processed

you need to choose a domain for your newsletters and map that domain to civismtp.uas.coop.  this is explained in step #3  in the instructions here:

http://civismtp.uas.coop/drupal/node/1

please follow all instructions very carefully and then test your settings using the test settings facilities in your civismtp account.  you can login to your civismtp account here:

http://civismtp.uas.coop/drupal

==================

on the inaccurate tracking:

The spooled emails is not related to the civismtp service,  they are spooled in your civimail installation, so we cannot help with that.  sorry :(

The tracked opens is not related to the civismtp service, tracked opens are facilitated by images in html emails that contact your civimail directly, so we cannot help with that either.  sorry. :(

whargrbl You're right! I missed that somehow -- I was using the example "newsletter.domain.com" but I forgot to put in the subdomain in the CiviMail's Mail Account setting... probably screwed something else up too but I'm testing it all over again. Thanks!

I'm just using the URL version from now on so it works. But the bounce report still isn't working =( I set the subdomain correctly in CiviMail and I'm pretty sure the MX record is correct for the subdomain. I went through the SMPT setup again and made sure everything was right. Anyway, here's a screenshot of my MX records, so please let me know if you see anything wrong:

yep, the domain is now setup correctly.  :)

however it appears that the soap proxy is not functioning correctly. when I access your soap proxy url,  I get a 404 not found error.  bounces and replies will not be processed until the soap proxy is working.

We recently moved hosts and I forgot to update the soap proxy, but I just did that but it still says it's not valid -- the file is totally there and working but the test doesn't think so. Any idea what the problem is?

Edit: just got your email, I'll use that for communication. Thanks Shane!
