Semi-Smart Groups

This might be a bug.... (or a feature? :P)

  • You create a smart group.
  • You start a fresh search on the db, not a search of the smart group members.
  • Select the results and choose, "add to group."
  • Select the smart group.

Results: you have a "semi-smart" group. The members who are there because they meet the criteria that were met when the group was create are "smart" -- dynamically joining, leaving the group based on the criteria. However, the members that you added via the second search are "stupid." They will not be removed or others added to that group based on the criteria you set in the search.

What if you want to create a smart group of two or more zip codes that are not consecutive? The advanced search form doesn't seem to handle that.

This is a static group and you will have to manually removed members from this group.

I would recommend to have larger zip range Or you can have two smart groups for each zip and then third smart group to include previous two groups.

Hi Kurund and all,

Thanks, I'm starting to see the value of a "semi" smart group, so we'll call it a "feature."

Meanwhile, your solution for my use case to create a group of groups would work. But I've actually got 10 zip codes to put in there. So I think I found a better solution: Search Builder

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Search+Builder

Any reason not to use the search builder for this use-case?

If it works for you, then use it :)
