Contribution for Membership
May 28, 2009, 12:29:47 pm
Hello,
I'm having a problem with restrictions on Profile types and combinations.
I'd like to accept online contributions for memberships.  I want to register members at the same time they pay, by using a Profile to collect the registration.
In the Contribution pages, I make a new page.  In Include Profiles (step 6 of 9) I am asked to include Profiles.  However, only Profiles of type Membership are listed.
Here's one problem:  If I use a Profile of type Membership, I can't make a public listing of current Members, because when I try to select "Results Column?" for that field, it tells me "'In Selector' cannot be checked for Membership fields.".

My other question is, how can I collect custom data?  I need to collect Organization name and Museum name.  If I add Organization fields to my Profile, I get errors like "Cannot add or update profile field type Membership with combination of Participant or Contribution or Household or Organization".  The only "type" which can be used freely is Membership.  That's how it's working now, but it's barely working.

So these combinations restrictions are really holding me back!

Why do you want to "make a public listing of current Member" (ie show a list of members to the public) for a page that is used for people Joining the organisation?

You should be able to add contact, individual and membership fields to your profile and add it to your contribution page (e.g. current employer) or a custom data field of Museum name attached to a contact or individual. You can't also add organization custom data fields as the profile must relate to only one contact.

You can use a different profile to display your search results / member listing.

Thank you for your answers!  Peterd, I just read the new "book sprint" book on CiviCRM.  That explained to me that I make a new Profile if I want to show a member directory.  When it came to registering members, the book was a bit of a tease - all I got was a screenshot and no instructions as to what fields to use.

My next question, is if I can only collect contact and individiual, how do I join an Organization?  I know the powers have decided that an Individual joins and is relationed to an Organization, but I need a sign-up form that takes it all at once:
Primary Contact - First Name:
Last Name:
Voter First Name:
Voter Last Name:
Organization Name:
Museum Name:
Organization Address:
Organization Phone:
Organization Website:

How do I link the Primary Contact individual to the Organization and collect both at the same time and have the Organization as the member (where the Individuals come and go..)?

ps I'm looking at the demo so kindly prepared by Eileen and this may answer my questions.  I'll update as necessary.  Thanks so much Eileen!
