limit number of activities shown on Home

We are just starting out with CiviCRM on Joomla and will only be using the core (backend) to record activities with contacts.
The list of activities will quickly become quite large, but I don't have enough activities entered now to answer my question, which is:
Does the CivicCRM Home page show absolutely all activities ever (which may cause a long page load time)?  Or does it show only ones where the scheduled date has not passed?  Or is there a way to make it show only a specified date range (like the current year only)?
Thanks!

"Out of the box" - we show only activities with status = "Scheduled". There is a "hook" you can use to modify what's shown on the Home page if this doesn't work for you, and you have some coding resources.
