It would be very nice to be able to have multiple status fields, in order to keep payment information/status separate from other status information. One approach would be to have a status profile one could add to an event, which unlike regular profile fields would not be visible to the registrant.

For example:

ID Checked? (check box)
ID Type? (drop down: Driver's License, Passport, Student ID)
ID Number (text field)
Issued Lunch Tickets (check box)
Badge status (drop down: Not ready to Print, Ready to Print, Badge Printed)
Scanned release form (File field)

Doesn't creating a group of custom fields for participants but not linking it with the event meet this requirement? If you do that you see the fields on their event registration but they don't see them. (you can't restrict this by event but I think you can by event type)
