Contact import, relationships and duplicates
August 07, 2007, 02:57:42 am
Hi,

Just setting up a new site using CiviCRM 1.8.beta.10676 / Drupal 5.2. Great to see how CiviCRM is progressing.

I'm importing contacts from client's Excel spreadsheet saved as CSV. This has both organisation & individual fields, e.g. Org name & contact's First Name. Where there are multiple contacts per org, there are multiple rows in the spreadsheet with org data duplicated. I have created relationship "Contact for / Contact is" from Individual to Organisation and used this in my import mapping, e.g. Firstname maps to Contact is -> First Name. What I'm hoping for is that when a second row is encountered for a given org during import, any additional Org data in that row will be filled in the Org record created for the previous row, and an additional Individual record will be created for the second row's Individual data, as a second "Contact for" the org. Is this behaviour supported?

I used the default dupe matching rules, as I want the 2nd row to be recognised as applying to the same Org based on Org name & email address. However what happens is that the 2nd row is skipped as a Conflicting Row at import step 3: "CiviCRM has detected 4 records with conflicting email addresses within this data file. If you continue, these records will be skipped." This happens even if I set the Org dupe match rule to require weight 100 (i.e. never match) and/or select No Duplicate Checking at import step 1. Just to clarify, I am importing into a pristine empty database, the duplicates are within the import file.

I had a similar issue back in the days of v1.4 on an installation with 100+ custom fields, but this is vanilla 1.8 beta with just 2 custom fields.

Cheers,

Dave J

Dave:

Can you please replicate this on http://demo.civicrm.org/drupal.  If you can replicate do file an issue on jira and attach sample import file.

Replicated as a simple test case involving a relationship. I then found I could replicate the "conflicting email addresses" issue with a very simple Organization import. Have created an issue for this simpler case:

Organization import skips rows with duplicate emails ignoring duplicate match settings
