Usage of %% - directories and symbolic links
June 07, 2009, 02:16:58 pm
I have noticed that civicrm makes temp directories called %%01 to %%FF and that symbolic links are created under the template directories. Since my provider only gives me limited access and the directories are created through php it is not possible for me to delete these directories. And since I test civicrm in a sandbox with subdomain I always end up with these directories that I cannot delete.

Someone at my provider has provided me with instructions and a script on how to delete those symbolic links so it cleans up my directory structure. I don't think however that the temp directories themselves are deleted however. Thus leaving a group of directories on the server somewhere that are not visible to me anymore. It solves my problem, but it also makes me wonder.

I have noticed that the structure of the directories is %% and two hex digits. And I have also noted since I deleted the links that it goes from %%00 to %%FF. But what happens if %%FF was created (as with me) and CiviCRM cannot create another directory?

The guy that gave me the script explained that the directories are probably created using 'smarty', and that they should also be deleted when they are no longer used by the program. He suspects that the programming might not be correct. I don't know if this is the case and I am not a coder so I cannot judge this, but maybe something that should be looked at.

Just thought I would share this. And if anyone has the same problem I have, please tell me and I'll post the script and the instructions.
