Why am I not able to create a profile for custom data fields?

Hi,
I have created a number of Custom Data fields for a new Custom Data Group. Is there any reason why when I go to create the Profile for these fields, there is no option for the fields that are within the group? There are a number of options for Contact, Individuals, Organisations and so on, but nothing for the group that I created. Does anyone know why this would be? I've gotta be honest, I'm a bit stumped so any help would be greatly appreciated!

What do you mean 'no options' - what are the fields being 'used for' (eg Contacts, Activity etc) and is this compatible with what the profile is being used for?
