Not sure if this has been floated before (did a search in case)

Idea would be to have option in Custom Data groups/sets to associate their visibility to a particular role.

This would tidy up the issue of the ACL hook that uses custom data for setting access - but would also pick up issues such as having a tab that has information that needs to be kept for special eyes only.

Any thoughts on difficulty or gotchas?

Primary thinking was pertaining to data that are set as 'tabs' but no reason it couldn't apply to 'inline' too

this could work.
Though the data would get more difficult cause it is not just the tab but the fields.

I did some of this with javascript but someone could just turn off javascript.

yes of course you are right - it would have to flow through the whole database in terms of ensuring those fields weren't then visible to people who shouldn't access them in Searches and Profiles.
