This system looks great and I only have one question that will determine whether or not it will work for us.

I am part of a non-profit that puts on free community dances on Friday night's in August. Your contact database is just what we need to keep track of our volunteers (currently about 150).

Each dance requires about 50 volunteers to file unique slots based upon time and activity. Thus, I need a system that will allow volunteers to see what time slides don't already don't have volunteers and let them sign up, hopefully sending them some confirmation.

So far, I haven't seen anything like this in your system, but it seems to be extensible. I am an ASP.NET programmer and do this type of thing frequently with C# and MS SQL Server.

If this capability is not available, is it fairly easy to build?

There is currently some limited support for volunteer management in CiviCRM. Mostly folks use custom fields and / or Activity records to track volunteer skills/categories and volunteering hours. There's also been some discussion of modeling event volunteers as a participant role with custom fields at the participant level for ratings, hours, etc. (not sure if this has been implemented by anyone).

There's no real support yet for scheduling - which sounds like a big part of what you need. There's definitely interest in the community for a volunteer management "component" - and a spec was written a while back:

However, no one has yet stepped up to sponsor and / or develop this. If you're interested and think you have the resources to take this on - a good first step would be reviewing the existing options and the spec (above) - and identifying the gaps relative to your requirements.
