Upgrades and duplicate emails

The errors I'm encountering with upgrading my database from 1.6 to 1.7 or 1.8 are associated with email addresses which are duplicated in the database. The contacts have different names but the existence of a duplicate email seems to cause foreign key constraint failures.
Can anyone confirm this is the case?
Will we need to purge all duplicate emails from the database to successfully upgrade?

yes. we've been adding more constraints to the db in recent versions to catch and trap various bugs. The code had a few bugs which introduced duplicate locations/email under certain conditions. We've also added some unique constraints to the uf_match table

Getting rid of the duplicate emails is probably a good first step
