Coupons for membership discounts and tracking?

Is there a way to create different "coupon codes" for special events (e.g. a non-profit going to a conference, or presenting somewhere) so that site admins could set up different codes to give out in different places, which would both:
  • allow special discounts for purchasing a membership (e.g. $5 off, or 10% off, etc), and
  • allow better tracking to see where users are signing up from? (e.g. a smart group indicating how many signed up with X code and how many with Y code)
I searched around but couldn't find much on "coupon" -- not sure if there's another term I should be looking for, or if this functionality just doesn't exist (yet).

unfortunately does not work for membership. Planning to add membership support in a future release

membership amount is now hookable :). Folks can use this hook to apply discounts similar to events

Dear Donald,
I understand this post wasn't updated for a long time but I hope you will be able to help me in finding the answer how to setup discount for membership.
I saw behind that link that the issue is completed but I have no idea how to do it.
Can you please let me know it or maybe where will I find the right solution?
