New install: section on /files dir is confusing
April 28, 2007, 03:47:27 pm
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Install+CiviCRM+1.7+for+Drupal#InstallCiviCRM1.7forDrupal-7.EnableCiviCRMModuleandBlocks

Earlier it says to create:
  • /drupal/files/images
    /drupal/files/pictures
    /drupal/files/temp
    /drupal/files/civicrm/crm_docs
    /drupal/files/civicrm/templates_c
    /drupal/files/civicrm/upload

Later in Step 7, by using the phrase "in the CiviCRM module root"  makes it sound like you should have:
  • /drupal//sites/all/modules/civicrm/files/
     /drupal//sites/all/modules/civicrm/files/temp
     /drupal//sites/all/modules/civicrm/files/uploads

Note that Drupal tries to create the /files/ directory (and make it writeable), but only when saving admin/settings. Same holds for /temp directory, and a /uploads/ directory in the CiviCRM module root.

I did it the first way and it worked. However, when I got an error message and went back to verify I followed the instructions, this phrase did throw me off. Fortunately, my error is fixed.

Great job on the improvements to CiviCRM and many thanks for all you do. I volunteer for a nature group and I know the hours given without pay can often go longer than you planned.

Thanx for the feedback. I edited the document and asked users to explicitly refer to step 2 for instructions on what directories to create and the permissions.

The wiki is editable, so feel free to edit it to make things more clear
