The U.S. CAN-SPAM act requires that commercial emails include a valid postal address for the sender. CiviMail enforces this as a best practice for all broadcast mailings.

so one of the organizations I am setting this up for does not have a valid office address they really want to put in the email.
Should I force the situation to prevent problems on my server and have them use an address of their home/office?

I'm just wondering why it has to be in the format:

Street
City, ST, etc.

Instead of:
Street, City, ST, etc

I wanted to have my address in-line in a recent e-mail and realized I couldn't.  Has anyone been able to do this, or can we add some way to customize the display of the address?

Try changing the address format at:

q=civicrm/admin/setting/preferences/address&reset=1

This will change it in all places where the address is displayed. If you want it changed just in mailing, you will have to extend the code to meet your needs

Dave, we want to be able to turn off (or on) the requirement that e-mails include {domain address}. We're not a for-profit, we are not sending "commercial e-mail", and would prefer not to have to include extra text in e-mails that US law *does not* require us to. CAN-SPAM does not apply to what we, or I would bet the vast majority of US-based CiviCRM installations do.

If a Civi user/installation want to run the risk of sending "commercial e-mail" that might violate CAN-SPAM that risk is theirs, not CiviCRM.org.

The "best practice" is to let Civi-using orgs/admins decide for themselves.

Hi,

That thread was from 2007. Since then, we've added an option so these token aren't mandatory anymore. You should update to the latest version

Xavier, thanks. We're on 4.2.10, is the option enabled in that or a later version, and what exactly is the option called? Thanks again.
