An Install Fatality

Attempted install of CiviCRM v. 1.7.10272 Drupal PHP4 on a clean Drupal 5.1 install.  Upon enabling the module, all calls to the site return:

Fatal error: civicrm_initialize() [function.require]: Failed opening required 'CRM/Core/Config.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/domain/public_html/site/modules/civicrm/drupal/civicrm.module on line 225

The sample MySQL data imported into my Drupal database without any problems.  I have double and triple checked the paths, etc., in civiccrm.settings.php, and it resides in the same directory as Drupal's settings.php (.../sites/default/).

The only thing I can think of is that I am blowing the syntax on the MySQL database/user line in civiccrm.settings.php.  The database does not require a password, and the example has one.  I merely left out the password and its single quotes in that line.  Should I have left the quotes in to create a null value?

If I weren't already bald, I'd be pulling my hair out by the roots.

Your civicrm_root is not right in the civicrm.settings.php file

If you have access to a PHP5 web server, you can try the new CiviCRM installer included in the latest 1.8 beta

Dang!  The path was provided by the techs at the data center, so I thought it could be relied on.  I'll reopen that support ticket and see if I can get it bumped up a level to get a more authoritative answer.

Unfortunately, this is a shared hosting plan, with MySQL 4.4.1, so the self-installer won't work.

I'm really under the gun, too, trying to get a website up for a special election campaign with a very tight timeline.  (And, since it's local and underfunded, I can't enlist a pro to help.  No bucks to pay him/her.)

I appreciate your guidance.  I'll start over with a fresh install, and perhaps with better advice from the hosting techs can get this baby to fly.
